These complex robots—RX-7 Machine Weapons—are actually an advanced type of fighting suit, piloted by a single occupant. As advanced as they are, however, they are being used as trainers for a new weapon, the Gunbuster. However, being relatively new technology, they are difficult to operate (stock shots show pilots working multiple controls with hands and feet, while fingers rapidly operate switches on the hand grips), so pilot candidates are selected from the best and brightest youth on Earth and the Lunar colony. These beings possess a third Space Eye on their foreheads, and watch over the Earth and it's remaining populace, granting it a limited amount of technology; those who infringe on the so-called Technos Taboo are harshly dealt with. Meanwhile, Honoka, a desert wanderer, along with her sand tank's sentient AI, Bogie, makes her living as a jack-of-all-trades, performing whatever tasks folks may require. This ranges from simple deliveries and escorts to giant insect exterminations. The only task she refuses to do is take human life. Nonetheless, her skill and grace with the katana has earned her the name "Sword Dancer". However, upon rescuing a quiet wanderer named Iks, who also holds the attention of the Third, she finds herself starting to think more deeply about her own inner thoughts and emotions.
